Why is Applied Curiosity more important now than ever before?
You need a strategy. You need a mental model.
We are being bombarded by information and data like never before. By the time you finish reading this paragraph, over 200,000,000 email messages have been sent, Google will have received 4 million search queries, Facebookers will have shared 2.5 million pieces of content, and Yelpers will have posted nearly 30,000 reviews. Between the birth of the world and 2003, five exabytes of content were created. Now, more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created every day. This all computes to mean that we are drowning in an information and data deluge.
Increasingly we have technology and mining tools to help turn this data and information into content we call knowledge. But ultimately, we humans filter this content through a very specific lens. This lens is clouded by our own built-in kinks in human reasoning and judgment (cognitive biases). Cognitive biases are systematic patterns in the way we think and make decisions. They help us make speedy decisions, but they can also act like Brain Bugs and lead us astray. Curiosity consulting helps you make better decisions by learning to identify cognitive biases and learn to lean against these biases to reveal blind spots, find hidden connections, and avoid becoming victims of our mental distortions.
“Leaning against biases means drawing people’s attention to facts that they normally would not pay attention to or might not even want to pay attention to although they are facts that are important.”–Daniel Kaheman, Nobel Prize winner in Economics
Any other reasons?
Yes. Glad you asked. Without curiosity, we can assume too soon that with all we know, we know enough. We can pick up our devices and search for and access anything–except what isn’t there. Only curiosity generates the very questions that inspire the answers we don’t yet have access to. Without curiosity, new answers will cease to exist.
“Management teams aren’t good at asking questions. In business school we train them to be good at giving answers.” –Clayton Christensen
It is more critical now than ever before to be able to ask the right questions. Applied Curiosity Lab Training and Consulting will provide the mental model to show you how.
What’s in it for me?
Curiosity Consulting is based on the work at Applied Curiosity Lab and the findings for the Living Curiously Method™. All of this is held up by a foundation of proven psychology–not faulty assumptions or trendy platitudes. It is consulting that creates mindset shifts for you and your organization that are science-based, powerful, and lasting.
- Understand how to use peak curiosity for yourself and how to arouse curiosity in others.
(see graph below)
- Ask better questions.
“Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” Voltaire
- Test assumptions. Become wiser.
“Begin challenging your own assumptions. Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while or the light won’t come in.”
– Alan Alda
Curiosity Consulting is your Windex. Identify your assumptions, and see what assumptions must be true for your plans to work.
- Generate more ideas and better ideas (divergent and convergent curiosity)
Ideas are precious currency to businesses. Good ideas require crisply defining problems.
- Change and broaden your perspective.
“I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” Abraham Lincoln
- Reveal blind spots to avoid traps (via Busting Brain Bugs & Cognitive Biases).
Smother misleading cognitive biases that spread from individuals to infect organizations.
- Drive personal and organizational curiosity.
Manage and establish comfort with uncertainty.
- Cross-pollinate to embrace diversity thinking.
Discover clever ideas and solutions from one context or industry and apply it to successfully to another.
- Get interested and become interesting.
Can you really be interesting without being interested?
- Surface hidden connections.
Zig-zag between seemingly unrelated items, topics, experiences, and ideas to surface powerfully useful connections.
- Make better decisions.
Generate and evaluate alternatives.
And then there’s the added, and perhaps most important benefit:
- You will experience a more fulfilling and adventurous life.
“Don’t get so busy making a living that your forget to make a life.”
– Dolly Parton

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”
– Albert Einstein

–Marty Mianji, CEO, Ustringer LLC
“Try to keep you mind open to possibilities and your mouth closed to matters that you don’t know about. Limit your ‘always’ and your ‘nevers’.”

“If you want to stay competitive as an employer of choice and provide growth opportunities for all your teams, be curious. If you want your organization to be more customer-centric and take market share, be curious. This singular trait, curiosity, will determine which firms will thrive and which ones will stumble.” Zander Lurie, CEO Survey Monkey
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”
– Albert Einstein
“In my 25 years in communications, and over a decade as a respected publisher of multiple magazines, I’ve come across a spectrum of other consultants who promise the moon and stars for better health, more wealth, professional success and business prosperity. A majority of other “experts” that have been hired have been formulaic, textbook, safe, shallow, or mundane in their thoughts and approaches. When one is being guided or advised by formulaic, textbook, safe, shallow, or mundane, these are the outcomes one will receive.”
“With Becki Saltzman as a Curiosity collaborator and contributor to my success, for once, the distant reach of the moon and stars are real on earth. Becki is bold. She is unfailingly honest. She’s intuitive and unafraid to explore layers between the layers to uncover new possibilities that best serve you. She’s an advocate for your evolutionary greatness and potential. She’s extremely intelligent and the aspect that makes her unique and an invaluable asset for your interests, is that she’s as equally smart as she is creative. This is a rare balance to find.”
“Elevating curiosity is not necessarily about being ahead of the curve; it’s more about unconventionally understanding, approaching, embracing, questioning and capitalizing well beyond the curve. New environments. New perceptions. New discoveries. This fundamental concept of Living Curiously so brilliantly constructed, is applicable towards all areas one may want to increase the overall quality of life, and vastly improve the next-level success of their business.”
“Through Becki’s uniquely strategically-crafted method of Living Curiously—whether you are a tech company, design firm, educational institution, healthcare organization, retailer or hospitality provider—you and your company will absolutely and immediately benefit from any amount of time invested with Becki Saltzman.”
–Janna Lopez, Media and Marketing Consultant
“Becki’s Curiosity Consulting is a question-based, probing, assumption-busting, fun, and incredibly effective experience that will help you and your business tremendously. In my world, it is critical to uncover blind spots, generate new and better ideas, and find hidden connections and opportunities that are often missed. Curiosity Consulting helps with all of this. It also encourages that exact kind of curious, unconventional thinking that my businesses require.”
Fred Ross, Real Estate Investor
“Curiosity has been hailed as one of the most critical competencies for the modern workplace. It’s been shown to boost people’s employability. Countries with higher curiosity enjoy more economic and political freedom, as well as higher GDPs. It is therefore not surprising that, as future jobs become less predictable, a growing number of organizations will hire individuals based on what they could learn, rather than on what they already know. …curiosity may be considered one of the critical foundations of talent.” Harvard Business Review
“…when it comes to performance, AI will have an edge over humans in a growing number of tasks, but the capacity to remain capriciously curious about anything, including random things, and pursue one’s interest with passion may remain exclusively human.” Harvard Business Review
